It’s not too often I get to sit down and actually watch TV shows.
Ok, that’s not a completely accurate statement. It’s not often that I get to sit down and actually watch primetime TV shows. I am a Hulu nut! (Watched the most recent Modern Family today. Awesome!)
However, I got home earlier than normal yesterday evening, and walked in just as my favorite show was coming on: How I Met Your Mother.
Now, if you’ve never seen this show, I recommend you get your butt in gear. I have seasons 1 & 2 on DVD, and can’t wait to add to my collection. I aslo have seasons 1-5 on an external hard drive. I acquired and became a fan of the show while in Afghanistan. It was on one of those missions where I didn’t want to go, and went, and ended up doing nothing (while other members of the team did some stuff, and ended up in an ambush in which 2 Afghan allies were wounded…blech!)
Anywho, I often find as I watch sitcoms that my mind starts to think on or wrap around the different notions offered. I think part of what draws us to these shows is how well we relate to the “humanness” of it all…of their commentary on human nature.
So, the biggest bro of them all, Barney Stinson, basically made this statement.
New Is Always Better!
To which Ted Mosby contested. Then Barney laid out this simple example:
“Ted, you know who’s a million times hotter than the hottest girl I’ve ever slept with? Her okay-looking friend I haven’t seen naked. Why? Because new is always better.”
Well, I then turn over to Huffington Post, which has actually added a “divorce page”

So, does this argument have merit? Is new always better?
Now, Ted gave examples like The Star Wars movies, and Guns and Roses records, and I suppose you can give an infinite list to the contrary, like good scotch, and vampire literature ::cough, Twilight sucks, cough::
but when it comes to people and relationships, does our society share a “new is always better” mindset?

I think, in one aspect, he is right – new CAN be better… but sometimes you end up going back to what you already have – because something new can’t be new forever. For instance, the ok-looking girlfriend of your girl, who you haven’t slept with… you sometimes want to find out what that’s like – because you haven’t had it yet. I have been that new is always better person… I have been called that as well. I don’t know if that’s a good or bad thing.
New is better only when it improves the old for the good or it is not bad for people in general. (Yes, Twilight does suck!)
